Montse Martín

Nací en  Lleida en el seno de una familia vinculada al arte y al deporte. Con 14 años formé parte de la selección española de gimnasia rítmica, llegando a ser campeona del mundo en Atenas (Grecia, 1991) y campeona de Europa en Stuttgart (Alemania, 1992).

Una vez retirada de la gimnasia, estudié diseño gráfico en la escuela IDEP de Barcelona. Trabajé cinco años para la agencia de publicidad, ADOS Comunicación, hasta que decidí iniciarme, de forma autodidacta, en el ámbito de la pintura, desarrollando, «Todas las mujeres…», una serie de retratos, en tono fetichista, pintados en acrílico sobre madera, con influencias del Pop Art, el Cómic y la Publicidad.

“Sigo siendo algo fetichista con las mujeres en general, ya sean actrices, gimnastas, madres o mi vecina la florista, a las que a menudo otorgo virtudes extraordinarias.”

La llegada de la maternidad a mi vida hace que mi obra se torne más personal y poética, dando la bienvenida a la ilustración con lápices y acuarelas, y a la representación del cuerpo femenino como herramienta de máxima libertad de expresión a través de la danza.

He desarrollado diferentes proyectos editoriales como diseñadora e ilustradora, para el grupo editorial Penguin Random House, como la serie de cuentos Olympia, basados en la vida deportiva de la gimnasta Almudena Cid, con gran acogida entre el público infantil y juvenil o El diario de Lola, de la autora bestseller, Elísabet Benavent, entre muchos otros.

En un nostálgico retorno a mi infancia publico, Pinceladas de Rítmica, un libro homenaje a la Gimnasia Rítmica a través de los retratos ilustrados de las mejores gimnastas de la historia. Una deuda y una declaración de amor que firmo junto a mi hermano, el músico profesional, Manuel Martín. Un libro que a día de hoy es referencia para los amantes de este deporte.

Montse Martín’s work is full of color and love for life. The strength and sensitivity of her illustrations make “her women” a symbol of empowerment in her particular feminine universe.

Montse Martín was born in Lleida into a family linked to art and sports. With 14 years she will be part of the Spanish rhythmic gymnastics team, becoming world champion in Athens (Greece, 1991) and European champion in Stuttgart (Germany, 1992).

After retiring from gymnastics, she studied graphic design at the IDEP school in Barcelona. She works for five years for the advertising agency ADOS Comunicación, until she decides to start, self-taught, in the field of painting, developing a wide collection of female portraits, entitled “All women …”. A series of fetishistic faces, in acrylic on wood, with influences from Pop Art, Comic, and Advertising.

“I am still a bit of a fetishist with women in general, whether they are actresses, gymnasts, mothers, or my neighbor the florist, to whom I often grant extraordinary virtues.”

The arrival of motherhood in her life makes her work more personal and poetic, welcoming the illustration with pencils and watercolors, and the representation of the female body as a tool of maximum freedom of expression through dance.

She has developed different editorial projects as a designer and illustrator for the Penguin Random House publishing group, such as the series of stories Olympia, based on the sports life of the gymnast Almudena Cid, with great reception among children and young audiences or El Diario de Lola, by bestselling author Elísabet Benavent, among others.

In a nostalgic return to the athletic roots of her youth, she created Pinceladas de Rítmica, a tribute book to Rhythmic Gymnastics through the illustrated portraits of the best gymnasts in history. A debt and a declaration of love that she penned with her brother, the professional musician and expert rhythmic gymnastics consultant, Manuel Martín.
